It is Important to Maintain Normal Blood Pressure

A new American study has found that youngsters having blood pressure at the high end of the normal range should keep a tab on what are they eating and do regular exercise and even take medicine. It has been said so as they suffer from damaged heart muscles by middle age and heart failure.

People with blood pressure of below 140/90 are not considered as hypertension, but as per researchers it can still affect their hearts. The research involved 2,479 young adults and they were followed were more than 25 year period.

Researchers said that desired blood pressure is less than 130/80 and a reading that tops 140/90 is considered as hypertension. The study has found that people having high readings were 70% more likely to suffer from treatment-resistant form of heart failure in comparison to those with the lowest reading.

Study's lead researcher Professor Joao Lima of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine said, "A number of patients in our study had high-normal blood pressure in their 20s and 30s, but by the time they were 45, they had the heart function of a 75-year-old".

Other experts were of the view that they were not surprised to know the findings. As per them, damage to the heart increases as blood pressure reading goes up. Associate Professor Poh Kian Keong, a senior cardiologist at the National University Heart Centre, Singapore, said that the findings warn people to bring changes in life that brings blood pressure back to normal.
