Jay Shree goes on acquisition spree in Africa

Jayshree-TeaKolkata-based tea manufacturer, Jay Shree Tea & Industries Ltd has said that it is acquiring three tea-estates in Africa. No details about the deal were disclosed.

This step has been followed by Jay Shree after it went ahead with a Rs. 112.5 crore buyout in the domestic arena during March.

As per the details provided by Jay Shree, it is going to buy 100 per cent stake in Kijura Tea Co Ltd in Uganda. For the rest it will buy majority 60 per cent stake. These estates will be of Mata Tea Co Ltd and Gisakura Tea Co Ltd in Rwanda.

These steps, said the company, is important since it has lost in a move to buy Mcleod. This had stopped it from entering into the African market. A report published in a private newspaper, Economic Times had said that the acquisitions in Africa will life its production capacity from 23.5 million tons to 29 million tons.

But that is not all; the company is also looking for opportunities in the Indian market as well. It has already signed an agreement with Assam Tea Corp Ltd. It will be buying green leaf from the Assamese company.
