Jordan's king meets with Syrian foreign minister on peace moves

Jordan's king meets with Syrian foreign minister on peace movesAmman - Jordan's King Abdullah II on Monday held talks over the latest peace moves in the region with the Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, who relayed to him a verbal message from the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to a royal court statement.

"The message dealt with latest developments in the region and efforts under way to arrive at a comprehensive and lasting peace in the Middle East," the statement said.

The letter also sought to "work out a unified Arab stance that serves the joint Arab interests," it added.

King Abdullah also briefed al-Muallem on the outcome of his talks with US President Barack Obama at the White House on April 21, when he visited Washington as a representative of the Arab world to relay the pan-Arab vision on peace with Israel as enshrined in the Arab peace initiative, officials said.

Al-Muallem failed to attend the discussions of six Arab foreign ministers and the Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa who met in Amman prior to the monarch's US journey to work out a joint Arab vision on Middle East peace.

The Jordanian-Syrian talks on Monday followed meetings between King Abdullah and leaders of Saudi Arabia and the Palestinian Authority over the past few days.

The monarch plans to meet with Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak shortly to keep him informed about the outcome of the meeting with Obama, which the king described as his "most successful encounter with a US president."

During the meeting, Obama expressed strong support for the two- state solution as well as for the Arab peace blueprint which offers Israel recognition by all Arab states if it quits all Arab lands it occupied in the 1967 Six-Day War, including East Jerusalem.

Al-Muallem's talks in Amman also have added significance as they come at a time when a right-wing government takes power in Israel with no vision so far for making peace with either the Palestinians or Syria, diplomats said. (dpa)
