Katju expresses regret over politicians’ attitude towards mediaPress Council of India chairperson Markandey Katju has expressed regret over the increasing intoleratne behavior of politicians towards the media.

It is believed that he was referring to the latest incidence in Himachal Pradesh where Virbhadra Singh, the Himachal Pradesh Congress chief threatened media person in the state capital, Shimla. Katju said that politicians are behaving in an undemocratic manner.

He also said that, "In a democracy it is the people who are supreme, and politicians are only servants of the people. Since people are the masters in a democracy, they have a right to know how their servants are functioning, and it is often through the media that they know about this."

He said that the media works as an agent of the people for giving them information about the political persona and intolerance towards media is not acceptable in a democratic setup. He cited examples of Chief Minister of a certain state accusing media of unruly behavior and spreading negative information while others vandalizing offices of media institutions. It is believed that he was referring to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and violent attacks on media by political workers in Mumbai.
