Kayem Foods Recalls Nearly 30 Tons of Fully Cooked Chicken Sausage Products

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service revealed that Kayem Foods is recalling about 30 tons of fully cooked chicken sausage products that were sold at Trader Joe’s and other retailers. Kayem Foods has taken this step because there is a possibility that the products might be contaminated with pieces of plastic.

According to the agency, the chicken sausage products were produced on many dates last month. The products that are recalled are as follows:

• 12-oz. packages of Trader Joe’s brand ‘Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage’ and the case code is 9605 and use by/freeze by dates of ‘4 22 15,’ ‘4 25 15,’ and ‘4 29 15.’

• 8-oz. packages of Al Fresco brand ‘Apple Maple Fully Cooked Breakfast Chicken Sausage’ with the case code 9709 and use by/freeze by dates of ‘JUN 13 2015’ and ‘JUN 20 2015.’

The issue was discovered when the Chelsea, Mass.-based company received complaints from two consumers. The consumers found small pieces of plastic in the product. According to Kayem Foods and the Food Safety and Inspection Service, they have not received any reports of injuries linked with consumption of the products.

The agency is classifying this as a Class II recall and it means that there is a ‘remote possibility of adverse health consequences’ from consuming it. If any consumer wants to ask anything related to this issue can call (800) 426-6100, Ext. 247.

In the last few years, Trader Joe’s has had many food recalls with several of the products sold under its house brand. The chain recalled five varieties of raw walnuts last month because of potential salmonella contamination. According to the company website, it has stopped selling it and the products have been destroyed.
