Killer Shot: Kids fall ill after vaccination

West BengalHere's another serious setback to the government's vaccination programme for children.

In a shocking development, a number of children were taken ill after being allegedly administered outdated anti-Japanese encephalitis injections at a medical camp at Khanakul in Hooghly on Tuesday.

The state government has already ordered a probe.

It is learnt that a team of health employees had come to a medical camp set up in Vudeb Primary School to administer the injections to children of the area.

When the injections were being administered to children, a local resident named Nazrul Islam noticed that the injections were out-of-date.

Islam immediately brought the matter to the notice of a teacher of a local school who came to the camp and demanded to see the samples.

As a result, the senior health officials had to suspend the vaccination programme after locals started demonstrating.

The incident prompted anger among the supporters of the Trinamool Congress, who impounded three health workers in the school for quite a lot of time.

Meanwhile, the state government on Wednesday had suspended four persons, including a District Medical Officer (Health).

Giving this information, District Chief Medical Officer (Health) Bhusan Chakraborty said: "We are investigating the matter after we received the complaints yesterday. Action will be taken against those responsible."
