Landline providers give a price cut due to pressure

Ofcom, BTThe landline telephone services providers will be offering a price cut in case of the major connections, following the pressure mounted by the telecommunications regulator, Ofcom.

It is stated that the prices will drop from £33 to just £2 in cases. It follows from the price cut that is termed as the "early termination" which is charged by up to 85 percent.

According to an Ofcom statement, "We very much welcome the reductions made by BT, TalkTalk and Virgin Media, which means that consumers will face much lower charges if they wish to end their contracts early."

The regulator claims that it has been investigating the fees for 18 months and the users who have had to pay charges  ended up paying under the remaining term of the contact, but Ofcom argued that firms weren't taking into account that they would no longer need to bear the cost of supplying service to a household that leaves early.

BT on the other hand stated: "If a customer leaves within the minimum contract period that they signed up to, they are charged the amount we expected to receive from them, less the costs we save as a result of them leaving early, as this is what we are legally entitled to."

In the meanwhile, it was claimed that Ofcom will try and reduce charges for landline (or landline plus broadband) to help reach an "industry-wide agreement on charges."
