LG Electronics posts record profit for second quarter

LG Electronics posts record profit for second quarterSeoul  - South Korea's second largest electronics producer LG Electronics Inc Wednesday posted a record 62.1-per-cent rise in net profits year-on-year for the three months from April to June, on strong overseas demand for its flat-screen televisions and mobile phones.

The 1.15-trillion-won profit (918 million dollars) followed two loss-making quarters. In the first quarter of 2009, the world's third largest maker of mobile phones posted losses of 198 billion won.

Sales revenue was up 17.2 per cent to a new record of 8.48 trillion won compared with the same period last year, the company said.

For the third quarter, LG, which also produces personal computers, refrigerators and other household appliances, expects sales to increase by another 10 per cent, pushed up by rising demand for mobile phones and flat-screen TVs.

TV sales skyrocketed by 45 per cent to 4.28 million units thanks to booming demand for LCD televisions, and mobile phone sales increased by 7.8 per cent to 30 million units. The increase was mainly in high-end touch-screen phones and models in the mid-price range.(dpa)
