London Mayor confirms scrapping of "luxury car" road toll

London  - London Mayor Boris Johnson confirmed Tuesday that he would scrap a proposed daily charge of 25 pounds (50 dollars) for "gas-guzzling" vehicles entering the centre of the British capital.

The conservative mayor had already announced his intention to drop the plan, proposed by his predecessor, and which would have come into effect in October.

Johnson confirmed the dropping of the proposed charge as Porsche, the German luxury carmaker, announced it had won a legal challenge against the toll before an administrative court in London.

Porsche said it had been awarded legal costs expected to amount to a six-figure sum, which it would donate to a British youth organization called Skidz which helps young people turn away from crime by training them as car mechanics.

Immediately afterwards, Johnson said in a statement he was "delighted" to be able to scrap the charge which he said was "unfair."

Livingstone said abolition of the plan was a "further blow" to London's attempts to help tackle climate change. (dpa)
