Malaria Spreading Like Forest Fire

Malaria It seems that different efforts made by the government and Kolkata Municipal Corporation's health department are not sufficient to prevent the spread of malaria.

According to statistics, 843 Kolkatans, between January and June this year, have been diagnosed with malignant malaria, as compared to just 93 cases over the same period last year. Till now, it has killed Uday Das (38), Surya Sen Street's resident and blinded another resident, 55-year-old Toton Mukherjee.

Surya Sen Street's residents are complaining that KMC has failed to destroy mosquito larvae. Hatibagan, College Street, Bidhan Sarani, Amherst Street, Bowbazar, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, Ripon Street Cossipore, Dum Dum, Baghbazar, Maniktala, Alimuddin Street, and Park.

Circus, have also been affected by the disease.

KMC's member, mayor-in-council (health) Subodh De said: "We are extremely worried about the rise in cases of malignant malaria. Had these been cases of benign malaria, we wouldn't have a problem. We are monitoring malaria-prone areas closely. There is no dearth of manpower to prevent the dreaded disease."

Health minister, Dr Surya Kanta Mishra, blamed global warming for the malaria spread. He claimed that the recent malaria attack in Kalimpong was due to lack of snowfall in the Hills.
