Manmohan, Azad Meet to Talk About AIIMS Issues

All India Institute of Medical SciencesOn Friday, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss various issue relating to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The PM expressed his concern over the increased number of people leaving AIIMS to join private hospitals.

At least 10 senior AIIMS doctors have resigned over the past one year to take up posts in private medical institutes.

Majority of doctors are not happy with the Government, since the Valiathan Committee recommendations that came two years ago, have not been implemented yet.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary K. Sujatha Rao said that the recommendation of rotating headship every five years “is not happening soon”.

According to the sources, the PM has asked to start recruitment and fill up the vacant positions as early as possible.

Around 190 posts in the institute are lying vacant and “no recruitment has been done since 2005”, said a senior AIIMS official.
