The Tsunami in March 2011, which was caused by a powerful earthquake that devastated Japan, cracked-up large pieces of Antarctica and pushed the pieces to the sea, according to NASA scientists.
They found pieces of double the size of Manhattan being broken away from ice mass. The pieces cracked away about 18 hours after the 9.0 earthquake off the northern coast of Japan, which propelled the tsunami. The pieces have floated into the sea since then.
The scientists at the space agency mapped the path of the wave during the 18 hours it took to reach Antarctica. Using satellite imagery, the scientists were able to see the ice cracking away in real time.
Several large pieces from the Sulzberger ice shelf, which has stayed still n the last five decades, was hit the power wave that traveled through the Pacific and Southern Oceans.
