In a rare upset, four-time world champion and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna recipient Manipur’s Mangte Chungneijang (MC) Marykom lost to unknown Pinky Jangra of Haryana in the 10th Senior National Women’s Boxing Championship in Jamshedpur on Monday.

The verdict left the Manipuri fuming and she left the ring in a huff.

Refusing to accept defeat, she later registered a protest with the judges.

Marykom, an inspector with Manipur Police, has been raising her voice against the “discrimination” being meted out by private and government sectors towards women boxers.

But after losing today, she alleged that players from the Northeast were getting a raw deal.

“I am going to submit a written complaint to the All India Boxing Federation secretary explaining how a section of influential officials from Haryana are influencing results at prestigious national level contests,” an emotionally charged Marykom told a packed room at the JRD Tata Sports Complex lawns.

The situation was tense till late evening with Marykom's supporters threatening to “teach the judges a lesson”, but officials and police intervened and managed to pacify them.

Meanwhile, Pinki, 19, a product of the SAI training centre in Hissar and a former junior national champion, had lost to Marykom in the last Nationals at Agra.

“It is a dream to play against one of the best boxers of the world and defeat her,” she said.

“I followed the advice of my coach (Anup Kumar, chief coach of Indian women's team) and relied on counter-attack with tight defence as I realised that Marykom was not in her best form,” said the girl, who has featured in two Nationals and participated in an international event (a training cum competition in China) earlier this year.

With the win, Pinki sailed into semis of the 46 kg category.
