Militants attack NATO supply line in north-west Pakistan

Militants attack NATO supply line in north-west PakistanIslamabad  - Dozens of Taliban militants on Wednesday attacked a truck terminal used for transporting supplies to US and NATO troops in Afghanistan and torched eight lorries in north-western Pakistan, a police official said.

No one was injured in an exchange of gunfire between the rebels and police following the attack on the depot in Peshawar, the capital of North-West Frontier Province (NWFP).

"It was 03:30 am when 40 to 50 militants raided the Khatoot Amin terminal. They first hurled the petrol bombs and then shot to ignite fire," police officer Fida Mohammad said.

"Two loaded and six unloaded trucks were destroyed," he added.

Taliban rebels have carried out dozens of attacks on truck terminals in Peshawar and along the key route between the Pakistani town and Afghanistan in recent months to disrupt the supply line for NATO-led international troops.

The US military is now seeking alternative routes through Russia and Central Asian republics.

Wednesday's attack came as the Pakistani army was fighting Taliban rebels in NWFP's three districts of Swat, Lower Dir and Buner, where the government claims to have killed more than 700 fighters. (dpa)
