Moderate earthquake strikes Indonesia's West Java

Jakarta-  A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's West Java province Friday afternoon, but there were no immediate reports of injury or structural damage, meteorologists said.

The quake struck at 1:51 pm (0651 GMT) at a depth of 11 kilometres, and occured at about 236 kilometres south-west of West Java district of Tasikmalaya, the National Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

An official at the agency said there were no reports of injury and damage following the quake, the latest to rock the world's vast archipelago nation in recent days.

Indonesia is located along the Pacific volcanic belt known as the "Ring of Fire," where earthquakes and volcanoes are common. (dpa)
