MPCB files case against Lavasa CorporationThe Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has field a case against Lavasa Corporation in NT Ghadge, for violation of the Environment Protection Act (EPA), 1986.

The MPCB named nine members of the board of directors and six officers of Lavasa Corporation. The accused include Ajit Gulabchand chairman and managing director of the firm behind the controversial project.

The Maharashtra government has field the case ont eh instance of the Environment Ministry. The case, which is likely to be filed in a district court, will most likely to be analyzed by the MoEF before it comes out with its final order.

The Bombay High Court had asked the MoEF to give either its rejection or its approval within three weeks. The new case follows months of legal proceedings involving the government agencies and the company behind the ambitious project, which has run into controversy.

Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has sought permission from the Pune magistrate court to prosecute promoters and directors of Lavasa Corporation for breach of the Environment Protection Act.

Section 15 of the EPA refers to a penalty for contravention of the act and rules, orders and directions, while section 16 stands for offences committed by the company. Violations under the EPA attract a penalty of up to Rs1 lakh and imprisonment of up to 5 years.
