Myanmar opposition leader Suu Kyi awarded Gandhi peace prize Durban  - Myanmar opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Reconciliation and Peace at a ceremony on Monday night in South Africa, where the Indian independence hero once lived.

The Gandhi Development Trust in the port city of Durban made the award, which was accepted on Suu Kyi's behalf by one of her relatives, SAfm public radio reported.

Suu Kyi, who has spent most of the past two decades in custody or confined to her home for resisting military rule in Myanmar is currently on trial for allegedly breaching the terms of her house arrest.

Gandhi lived for almost two decades in South Africa as a young man, in Durban and in Johannesburg. Durban is home to a large Indian population.

His granddaughter Ela Gandhi founded the Gandhi Development Trust, which awarded the prize. (dpa)
