No. of retailers accepting Bitcoins on the riseThough governments are still reluctant to accept digital currency Bitcoin, the number of companies and vendors accepting the currency is on the rise.

According to website CoinMap, the number of physical companies and retailers accepting Bitcoin has nearly tripled to more than two thousand. Some of the well-known retailers that have already accepted the digital currency include Berlin record store Long Player and Santa Monica, Calif.-based florist Flower Lab.

Vesna Sic, owner of Berlin-based guest house Lekkerurlaub, said, "People come to us from all over the world because we accept Bitcoin. We had one man from Texas who has nowhere at home where he can spend his Bitcoins, so he came to Berlin for a week to spend them."

More and more companies and retailers are accepting Bitcoin as consumers are increasingly buying into the digital currency and seeking to spend it. You can now purchase olive oil in Spain or vodka shots in Moscow using the digital currency.

First emerged in 2008 and proposed by an unknown programmer or group, Bitcoin just exists as software. It is not controlled by any government. It has no physical existence, though a few companies have started minting physical Bitcoins with special codes that can be scanned to link them to the digital version.

Currently, there are nearly 12.2 million Bitcoins in circulation, with each valuing at around $1,000.
