OICR to spend $18.3 million on cancer researchThe Ontario Institute for Cancer Research has said that is has set aside $18.3 million in order to fund efforts leading to a more targeted treatment for cancer patients.

The institute will spend three new imaging research projects aimed at boosting the chances of the adaptation of more targeted treatment for cancer and halt the spread of cancer.

Nicole Onetto, the deputy director at OICR said that, "In many cases, we are using some drugs for the wrong patient or the wrong tumour, or we're using drugs for far too long when they're not benefiting the patients." She also said that the funding will aim to address the problem.

The funding will be be focused on developing new tools that can be used to diagnose specific types of cancer and provide the right medicine for the patients. The new treatment will benefit benefit cancer patients within the coming five years, according to experts.

Dr. Onetto pointed out that the funding will not only be aimed at new tools and new sophisticated images but will also look into understanding the characteristics of the tumour and medices needed for treatment.

The Canadian Cancer Society welcomed the new funding announcement and said that it will bring more accuracy in treating cancer patients.
