Wal-Mart India conducting internal bribery investigations
The Indian unit of American retail chain, Wal-Mart has suspended various senior executives and has delayed the opening of the stores in the country as it investigates instances of bribery.
The timing of the incidence is unfortunate for the company as the Indian policy makers just allowed foreign firms to enter the Indian market amid intense opposition from various circles. The internal investigation of the company has given an issue to the opposition parties, who are looking take advantage of it to oppose the government's decision to allow foreign investment in multi brand retail.
Bharti Walmart, a 50-50 joint venture between the Indian company Bharti and Wal-Mart, said in a statement that the company has suspended some officials in order to ensure that a complete and detailed investigation is conducted into the allegations of bribery.
The company has not confirmed reports but suggest that chief financial officer and the legal team of the company were suspended by the company. Wal-Mart has said earlier in the company has expanded its bribery investigation to India, China and Brazil following initial investigations in Mexico.
Bharti Walmart current operates 18 wholesale stores in India but is only allowed to sell products to other businesses in the country.
