South Korean inspection finds no GM wheat in US imports

South Korean inspection finds no GM wheat in US importsThe Authorities in South Korea have said that they have not detected genetically modified wheat during their initial tests of the wheat imported from Oregon State in the US.

Imports of US wheat were concerned after reports emerged that a rogue strain of the crop was detected in the US. Millers in South Korea had also suspended imports of wheat from the US until government tests on shipments from around the United States was released. The government report on the matter is expected to be released on Wednesday.

An official at Korea's Ministry of Food and Drugs said that even if the preliminary test result have not found any strain of genetically modified wheat, the authorities in the Asian nation would carry out tests on all samples of wheat and flour imported from the US. Reports suggest that the rogue strain of the crop was discovered in northeast Oregon field in April in crops that were developed by biotech giant Monsanto Co more than a decade ago but was never sent for commercial production.

The detection of strain also resulted in Japan suspending imports from the Pacific Northwest on Thursday while some Asian countries increased their inspections and the European Union said that it would increase testing on the imports.
