Latvia hopes to regain lost films, documents from Russia
Riga - The Baltic nation of Latvia hopes to regain its films and documents stored in the Russian national archives, local media reported Monday.
The Ministry of Culture hopes to have returned films, documentaries, and animations produced in Latvia from 1930 to 1991 as well as documents taken from the independent Latvia after the Soviets occupied the small nation before World War II.
After Latvia declared its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the films were taken to Moscow and have been stored in the Russian national archives.
Latvia also hopes that copies of KGB documents regarding Latvian political prisoners will also be regained.
Russia has said that it is ready to provide the KGB materials only to relatives. (dpa)
