Report blaming Nehru for India’s defeat in 1962 war leaked
Australian journalist Neville Maxwell has released a section of the confidential Henderson Brooks report that blames former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for India's defeat in the 1962-Sino Indian war.
Neville Maxwell, a retired war correspondent who was based in Delhi at the time of the Sino-India war, uploaded still classified section of the report on the internet.
The released section of the report discusses the poor state of Indian army's preparedness at the time, and how the Army was ordered by the Jawaharlal Nehru-led government to challenge the Chinese military in a war it could only lose.
Nehru's forward policy has been repeatedly criticized as being a contributor to India's humiliating defeat in the war. Maxwell wrote on his website that the confidential report holds Nehru responsible for the defeat.
The retired war journalist even wrote, "The reasons for the long-term withholding of the report must be political, indeed probably partisan, and perhaps even familial."
The report was commissioned by the then chief of Army staff J. N. Chaudhuri and authored by Lt. General Henderson Brooks and Brigadier P. S. Bhagat, who was the commandant of the Indian Military Academy at the time.
The report is still considered as a classified document by the Indian government. BJP President Rajnath Singh had earlier requested the government to declassify the report, but Defence Minister A. K. Antony told the Parliament that the report couldn't be made public because it contains very sensitive information.
