Amcu expands its strike as more workers join protests
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has said that the strike in the platinum sector is goring in power as more workers join the protests against the companies.
Amcu co-ordinator Evans Ramokga said, "The strike continues, the number of workers on strike has increased. No one reported for work today [Monday]. I have been going around the mine to check following allegation that workers intend to return to work. I can confirm no one has abandoned the strike. The workers are determined to fight for a living wage."
The strike has been continuing in its eight week now and protests are intensifying as an increasing number of workers join the strike. Amcu members at Lonmin Platinum, Impala Platinum, and Anglo American Platinum stopped production on 23 January, 2014 and demanded a basic monthly salary of R12,500.
The workers have said that they will not agree to a proposal by the companies to offer an increase of up to nine percent in salaries. The union has said that it now demands a basic salary of R12,500. Companies have said that the increase is not affordable and amounted to a 30 percent increase.
