Neurotic over-thinkers think creatively: Study

It has been found in a new study that neurotic people have more chances of coming up with new ideas as they are likely to be more creative than others. The study has been published in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences Opinion.

As per researchers, a part of the brain, which controls self-generated thought, is quite active in neuroticism that leads to both positives i.e. creativity and negatives i.e. misery.

It has been found by researchers that people, who have high neuroticism in personality tests, usually have negative feelings and thoughts and they find it difficult to tackle dangerous jobs, and have more chances of experiencing psychiatric disorders in their lifetime.

Researchers added that differences in these brain circuits’ activities could explain neuroticism.

They teamed up with Dean Mobbs of Fear, Anxiety and Biosocial Lab, from the Columbia University. Mobbs had shown earlier that a change occurs from forebrain activity associated with anxiety to midbrain activity related to panic as a threat stimulus approaches.

It has also been shown by Mr. Mobbs that the change from anxiety to panic is as a result of circuits that are located in the basolateral nuclei of the amygdale.

According to lead author Adam Perkins, a personality researcher at King’s College London, “If you have a tendency to switch to panic sooner than average people, due to possessing especially high reactivity in the basolateral nuclei of the amygdale, then that means you can experience intense negative emotions, even when there’s no threat present”.
