Global Warming rising due to high emission of carbon dioxide
It is heart wrenching to know that our environment is constantly getting more and more polluted due to harmful emission of gases like carbon dioxide. Recently, it was reported by the Global Carbon Project that the worldwide emissions of carbon dioxide, due to the burning of fuel and production of cement, has gone up by 3.5% per year from 2000 to 2007. This is nearly four times more than the growth rate in the 1990s.
It was further informed by the Canberra, Australia-based Global Carbon Project, “Carbon released from burning fossil fuels, producing cement and changing land use produced 9.94 billion metric tons of carbon compared with 9.7 billion tons in 2006.”
During 2007, the emissions in U.S. alone increased by nearly 2%. Furthermore, forests and oceans, which are considered to be the natural carbon sinks, have slowed down their absorption rates.
Pep Canadell, executive director of the Global Carbon Project, informed through a statement, “This new update of the carbon budget shows the acceleration of both CO2 emissions and atmospheric accumulation is unprecedented and most astonishing during a decade of intense international developments to address climate change.”
In spite of the efforts to slow down the rate of emission by various countries, the numbers revealed in the report has really shocked the scientists.
The report also revels that China contributed for nearly half of the worldwide increase in the emission.
It is well known that global warming basically means the rise in the average temperature of the Earth near surface air and oceans. The process has been taking place from recent decades and it has many adverse affects on mankind and environment.
A decade which ended in 2006 has been titled as the warmest time period in the Northern Hemisphere in the last 1,300 years or more, according to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Scientists.
