Nylon mesh to give traditional teabags the boot

London, Nov 7 : The traditional soggy paper teabags will soon be replaced by revolutionary nylon mesh versions.

Asda is replacing its conventional tea bags made from perforated tissue paper with the new nylon mesh bag for its upmarket range of teas.

Experts believe that the new bag will allow more flavour to seep into a cup of hot water.

One expert compared tea from the nylon bags as “top rate claret” against “cabbage water”.

Asda is selling its own label Extra Special range of tea in the new style see-through nylon bags.

Although the bags have been available at specialised tea shops, it is the first time they have gone on sale in mainstream stores.

At 1.97 pounds for 25, the nylon bags are around four times more expensive than the paper version.

However, tea enthusiasts say the cost is much lower than a cup of fresh coffee.

Other advantages of the nylon bags include extra strength so they don't tear, they allow the whole tea leaf to open up without damaging the bag, they do not give the tea a "paper" taste and bigger holes allow more flavour to flow out.

"These nylon mesh teabags are the next best thing to whole leaf brewed in a teapot. Hopefully, this type of bag will become the norm,” the Daily Mail quoted Martin Isark, drinks expert and author of the Supermarket Own Brand Guide, as saying.

"Compared to other teabags these have the complexity of first growth claret. I've tasted this range of tea bags and for taste quality there is nothing on the supermarket shelves that competes,” he added. (ANI)
