250 Manipal Students May Lose Their Medical Seats

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under Anbumani Ramadoss 250 Manipal Students May Lose Their Medical Seatsasked Manipal University to reduce the intake of students from 500 to 250 at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal and Mangalore from this year. The result: 250 students now face the vista of losing their medical seats.

In its notification issued on September 29, the Ministry informed the colleges that the last date for the transfer of 250 students is September 30. However, as per schedule, the colleges had already completed admissions for 500 medical seats on June 18, 2008. 

Ramadoss to take up homosexuality issue with PM

“These are not my views, they are the views of the department. I will take up the matter with the Prime Minister,” Ramadoss told reporters here on Tuesday.

He also asked the Home Minister to be “more responsible” in its statements.

The Centre on Monday had told the Delhi High Court not to consider Ramadoss’ views on allowing same gender sex among two consenting adults.

Ban on smoking in public private places to come to effect from Oct. 2

Anbumani RamadossChennai, Sept 27 : Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday said that the ban on smoking in public private places will come to effect from October 2nd and the penalty charge will be rupees two hundred at the initial stage.

He was participating in a Conference on International Study about Human Rights and Mental Health organised by the Department of Social Work Studies at Madras Christian College in Chennai, Principal Dr. V. J. Philip, staff of the department and students took part in this conference.

Ramadoss to inaugurate regional workshop on illicit trade in tobacco products today

New Delhi, Sept 16:Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Anbumani Ramadoss Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Anbumani Ramadoss will inaugurate a two-day regional workshop on illicit trade in tobacco products here today.

The workshop is being jointly organised by the WHO-South East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The workshop will be attended by delegates from SEAR countries - Bangladesh, Burma, Bhutan, China, Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timur-leste.

The two-day workshop aims to build awareness about tobacco control issues including the existing legislation and to improve enforcement capacity of the provisions of the Indian Tobacco Control Act, 2003.

Pointing to the huge cor-relation between the low health indicators and the fact of social deprivation among the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, other backward sections and minorities, Dr. Ramadoss said that development has to be an all inclusive process. He said that without including deprived sections, growth could not be termed as real.
