Four member UN team arrives in Pak for Benazir assassination probe

Benazir BhuttoRawalpindi, Feb. 7 : A four member UN team probing former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination has arrived here to carry forward the inquiry.

The UN officials, who arrived late on Saturday, included officials Wright Voranic, Fujiwara, Mersky and Pradhan Summar. The commission members are expected to resume their work on Monday.

Strict security arrangements have been made for the UN inquiry commission, The Dawn reports.

Sources said four investigators, who had arrived in Islamabad on December 13, quizzed several persons in the country before returning back with other security officials.

Official sources said the reason for the team cutting short its visit was probably the change in the schedule of three senior members of the fact-finding commission.

Musharraf was also quizzed about the series of events occurred after Bhutto’s tragic death on December 27, 2007, The News reports.

The three-member UN team led by Chile's envoy to the UN Heraldo Munoz recorded statements of all the political leaders and inspected the site where Bhutto, the wife of incumbent President Asif Ali Zardari, was killed, Online news agency reported.

Pakistan had earlier this year sought a UN probe into Bhuttto's killing after its own investigations and one by Scotland Yard failed to make headway.

According to the Daily Times, the UN commission would visit New Scotland Yard to study a report prepared by British investigators claiming that Bhutto was killed by the force of the suicide bomb and not by a bullet.

The team will also interview former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf in London.

The panel met Bhutto''s widower, President Asif Ali Zardari, and other senior officials on Thursday, the presidency said.

"We approached the UN because firstly we wanted transparent and above board investigations so there are no accusations of bias," presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar quoted Zardari as telling the UN team.
