Rare documents including journal from Charles Darwin''s ship up for grabsLondon, Apr 29 : A rare collection of historic travel documents and photos, which includes a journal from the ship made famous by scientist Charles Darwin, are to go under the hammer at an auction in London.

One of the biggest highlights of the auction will be a set of photos dating back to the 1930s, which gives details of the first royal visit to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, undertaken by Princess Alice.

The small dark brown egg, with Darwin''s name written on it, was found by Liz Wetton, 80, a volunteer at the Zoology Museum’s bird egg collection.

It bears a large crack, caused after the great naturalist put it in a box that was too small for it, reports The Independent.

According to Prof Michael Fitzgerald of Dublin''s Trinty College, Darwin had an extraordinary attention to detail but had difficulties with social interaction.

Prof Fitzgerald reckons that Darwin was suffering from a behavioural disorder.

In the book, called Darwin''s Sacred Cause, science historians Adrian Desmond and James Moorehave gathered evidence that shows Darwin was passionately opposed to slavery and that was the prime reason he embarked on his famous research.

The pair uncovered private notes and letters, which reveal that Darwin''s opinions on slavery were far stronger than had previously been believed.

Vatican official: Catholic Church doesn't owe Darwin an apology

Charles DarwinVatican City  - A senior Vatican official indicated Tuesday the Roman Catholic Church will not issue a apology to Charles Darwin for the religious controversies around his theory of evolution.

Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi was commenting on an appeal by the Church of England's public affairs head that the church should say sorry for initially misunderstanding the 19th century English scientist's work.

"It is curious and significant, but also indicates the cultural differences between us," Ravasi, president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, said of the Anglican initiative.
