Wearing a multicoloured Hermes headscarf and a large grey woollen coat, Queen Elizabeth II was photographed taking the train to Norfolk Thursday for her Christmas break.

The 10.45 from King's Cross station in London dropped her off at King's Lynn station for a quiet Christmas holiday with husband Prince Philip and other members of the royal family at her private Sandringham estate.

First step taken as baton gets set for a long run

commonwealthThe spectacle of the Commonwealth Games was unveiled on Thursday when Queen Elizabeth handed the relay baton for the race to President Pratibha Patil in a colourful ceremony on the Buckingham Palace grounds.

Patil, who later left for Cyprus, is the first head of state to receive the baton from the Queen, marking the launch of the Games that will be held in New Delhi next October.

The relay began at the ground itself. Patil handed the baton to Sports Minister MS Gill. It then went to Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Games and Olympic gold- medallist Abhinav Bindra.

Patil then passed on the Baton to India's sports minister M. S. Gill, who handed it over to Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of the organising committee of the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Kalmadi then handed over the baton to the first baton-bearer Abhinav Bindra, India's first individual Olympic gold medallist.

According to The Telegraph, the Commons Public Accounts Committee has urged the royal household to devise a business plan for keeping the building open longer to try to pay for a backlog of maintenance that has risen to 32 million pounds.

At present, the palace is opened to the public for 60 days of the year, generating revenue of five million pounds.
