US Open: Somdev goes down fighting to MurrayNew York, Sep 1 - India's top-ranked singles player Somdev Devvarman made a first round exit from the men's singles of the US Open here after he went down fighting to fourth-seed Andy Murray of Britain.

Somdev gave a tough fight to the 24-year-old Murray, breaking him twice in his opening service game and stretched the set to a tie-break. The Scotsman was made to work hard but came through 7-6(7-5), 6-2, 6-3 on a hot afternoon in New York Wednesday.

Somdev DevvarmanIndia's campaign in the ATP Masters $3,645,000 Sony Ericsson Miami Open qualifiers has came to halt as Somdev Devvarman has crashed out after going down to Ukrainian Illya Marchenko on Wednesday.

The 20th seeded Somdev was ousted by third seeded Illya in straight sets by 4-6 3-6 in the second round of the men's singles event of the Miami Open qualifiers.

Somdev, the World no. 120, had defeated David Guez of France in the first round but he failed to get past his third seeded opponent in the second round.

The 20th seeded Somdev got past David Guez of France in straight sets by 7-6 6-4 in the opening round. Somdev was made to fight hard by his 139th ranked opponent in the first set but Somdev held his nerves to win the first and second set to wrap up the match.

Though Yuki Bhambri climbed up two spots to 326, Rohan Bopanna plummeted 21 places to be at 411.

The doubles ATP ranking list showed Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi remaining at sixth and eighth respectively.

Meanwhile, Sania Mirza came down by eight places to arrive at 92 in the latest Women's Tennis Association rankings chart. The sports girl has 745 points and has a healing a wrist injury.

The Indian duo survived from scare of James Cerretani and Travis Rettenmaier of America as they ousted their opponents in a three setter match 5-7 6-4 7-5 in the first round of men’s doubles event.

Somdev-Prakash will now lock horns with the winner of the first round match between eleventh seeded pair of Simon Aspelin of Sweden and Australian Paul Hanley and Brazilian Marcos Daniel and Daniel Koellerer of Australia.

Chennai, Jan 10 : The Indian presence in the $400,000 ATP Aircel Chennai Open tennis tournament ended here Saturday with the exit of the scratch combination of Somdev Devvarman and Sanam Singh in the semi-finals of the men's doubles.

The Indian wildcard pairing went down 3-6, 6-4, 5-10 to Janko Tipsarevic (Serbia) and Yen-Hsun Lu (Taipei).

On Friday night, third seeded Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna lost to the British pair of Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski 6-3, 3-6, 2-10 in the quarter-finals of the same event. (IANS)

Somdev-Sonam advance into Chennai Open semis Somdev Devvarman and Sanam Singh of India have stormed into the semifinal of the men’s double event of the US $400,000 Aircel ATP Chennai Open after ousting Jeff Coetzee and Rogier Wassen duo in the quarterfinal on Thursday.
The Indian duo registered straight set victory over the unseeded Russian-Dutch pair of Jeff and Rogier by 6-2, 6-3 in the men’s double event. Somdev and Sanam dominated throughout the match.
Somdev-Sanam duo earned 55 points out of the 93 in the match. The Indian pair saved three out of four breakpoints on their serves and wrapped up the match in less than one hour.

The Indian duo defeated Jeff Coetzee (South Africa) and Rogier Wassen (The Netherlands) 6-2, 6-3 to make up for the loss of the popular pair of Yuki Bhambri and Carlos Moya (Spain) who went down 5-7, 1-6 to Spaniards Marcel Granollers and Santiago Ventura in the quarter-finals.(IANS)

Somdev-DevvarmanChennai, Jan 5 (IANS) Some off-season work on his "transitional game", besides overall fitness, proved to be key factors in his resounding 7-5, 6-2 win against German veteran Rainer Schuettler, said Somdev Devvarman after he moved into the second round of the $400,000 ATP Aircel Chennai Open tennis tournament, here Tuesday night.

Reflecting on his success Tuesday night against the 33-year-old Schuettler, a former World No. 6, Devvarman said his "new style" of play with more trips to the net than before, was a result of his off-season training.

The 24-year old Somdev and Rainer had met each other in the semifinal of the Chennai Open last year where Rainer had pulled out due to injury. Somdev had lost to Marin Cilic of Croatia in the title round last year.

Somdev DevvarmanChennai, Dec 21 : Indian Davis Cup players Somdev Devvarman and Rohan Bopanna have received wild cards for the singles main draw of ATP Aircel Chennai Open tennis tournament to be held here from Jan 4-10.

Somdev, ranked 126, was the finalist here last year. He along with Sanam Singh has received the wild card for the doubles draw as well.

Former World No. 1 Carlos Moya from Spain, who won here in 2004 and 2005, has received a wild card for both singles and doubles main draw. He will be partnering Indian teen sensation Yuki Bhambri, ranked 338, for the doubles.

Somdev, Raja in ATP Challenger semifinals Knoxville, Tennesse, Nov 13 : India's Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja moved into the semi-finals of the $50,000 ATP Challenger tennis here with an upset victory over Kaden Hensel and Adam Hubble.

Somdev and Raja went past third-seeded Australian pair 6-3, 6-1 and set-up a semifinal meeting with South African pair Raven Klaasen and Izak Van der Merwe.

Second-seeded Harsh Mankad of India and Treat Conard Huey of Philippines also reached the last four, beating Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria and Sweden's Fillip Prpic 6-7(5), 6-1, 10-4.

Somdev, seeded sixth, went down to Roko Karanusic of Croatia 6-7 (8), 3-6 while Prakash Amritraj lost to South Africa's Izak Van der Merwe 3-6, 2-6 in the $50,000 hard court event.    

Somdev, however, cleared the doubles first round with fellow Indian Purav Raja going past Americans Cory Parr and Todd Paul 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Somdev lost the final of the Charlottesville Challenger to second-seeded American Kevin Kim Sunday.

Prakash Amritraj climbed 19 places to 204 in the charts.

In the Men's doubles, Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes were unchanged at 7th and 8th places, respectively.

In the WTA list, Sania Mirza remained steady in the 58th spot in singles and 37th in doubles rankings.(IANS)

Somdev goes down fighting to Kim

Somdev DevvarmanCharlottesville (Virginia), Nov 9 : India's Somdev Devvarman saved three match points but fell short against American Kevin Kim 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 4-6 in the final of the $50,000 Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Challenger tournament.

The Indian came back strongly after losing the first set. He saved three match points in the second set to draw level. But in the end Kim, ranked No. 87, managed to edge past Devvarman in the thrilling baseline slugfest here Sunday.

"It's disappointing to lose in the finals," Somdev said.
