Bonn, Oct 30 : Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand retained the World Chess Championship title in Bonn late on Wednesday night after ending the 11th game with Russia’s Vladimir Kramnik in a draw.
Anand had earlier won the Championship in 2000 and 2007.
Anand won three games, drew seven times and lost once en route to winning the competition by 6.5 points to 4.5.
With this win, he became the first player in chess history to have won the World Championship in three different formats: Knockout, Tournament and Match.
Vishwanathan Anand has once again proved his might by taking a lead against Valdimir Kramnik in the world Chess Championships at the Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonn on Thursday. The Indian Champion won three games and drew four games. Now, with only five games remaining, the ace Indian player needs to draw just three games to win the title.
On Tuesday at the opening round of the World Chess Championship at Bonn in Germany, World Champion Viswanathan Anand displayed a fine performance when he took the match to a draw against Russian Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik.
The World Championship campaign was started by Anand with black pieces against Kramnik, and the match soon reached to a draw after 32 moves.
This Championship will be played over 12 classical games. If in case a tie happens then the winner would be decided through rapid and blitz games.
The coveted chess player Viswanathan Anand had managed to stay in the top three in World Ranking for over a decade. But a recent setback has sent his rank crashing to 5th place.
This has come to light in the latest world rankings declared by the world governing body FIDE. Anand had lost the Chess Masters Final Tournament in Bilbao, Spain to arch rival Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria who is now world Number one.
