Philippine medical team for Myanmar stuck in Manila

Manila  - A Philippine medical team bound for Myanmar to help victims of a deadly cyclone was stuck in Manila after failing to secure travel documents to the reclusive nation, a government spokesman said Tuesday.

Anthony Golez, deputy presidential spokesman, said Myanmar's secretive military junta has not yet approved travel documents for the 15-member medical team.

"As of yesterday, our team remains on standby," he said. "They just need the necessary travel documents."

The team was organized last week on orders of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to help in the relief efforts in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis, which killed an estimated 100,000 people.

International aid agencies estimate that up to 1.5 million people in Myanmar are desperately in need of food, water, shelter and medicine after the disaster, deemed the worst to hit South-East Asia since the December 2004 tsunami. (dpa)
