Phone application to track planes could aid terrorists: Expert
A mobile phone application cost at only two pounds is capable of tracking aircraft in flight and this fact has raised fears that it could make them terror targets. The Plane Finder AR application for the Apple iPhone and Google’s Android allows its users to point the phone to the sky to detect the height, speed and position of a nearby aircraft. The application also shows the flight number, departure and destination points and the name of the airline.
The application was developed by a British company and sold in the online Apple store for just 1.79 pounds. But the security experts have labeled the application as an aid to terrorists as it creates fears that it could be used to target an aircraft with a surface to air missile.
The application works by intercepting the Automatic Dependent Surveillance broadcasts transmitted by most passenger aircraft to a new satellite tracking system which has replaced the radar system in most of the countries.
The European and British air traffic control systems have not adopted the technology yet but all the new aircrafts are available with the technology.
