Porn actors in California could soon have to wear safety goggles

Porn stars could be asked soon to don far more protection than only condoms in California. The Division of Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHA) of the state has proposed new rules the previous week.

Under these new rules, adult film actors would be required to wear eye gear for many scenes. The rules have not got finalized yet. They would also impose strict hygiene standards and ban common porn practices.

According to porn companies, actors and even some health advocates say the new rules are unnecessary.

Diane Duke, CEO of the Free Speech Coalition, a trade association for the adult entertainment industry, said these are regulations designed for medical settings, and are not viable on an adult film set, and even on a Hollywood film set. She added that these rules would stigmatize the performers and risk 'shutting down an entire industry'.

California has been producing the huge majority of America's adult films since very long. However, recently, critics have pushed to crack down on the state's porn industry.

Los Angeles County passed a controversial law in 2012, requiring condoms on porn sets. This resulted in over 90% drop in production in the county.

Technically, under the present health regulations, porn stars are required to use condoms across California, but as per the critics the rule has almost never been enforced.

In the US, California and New Hampshire are the only two states that have openly allowed adult film production, although other states also tacitly allow it. The condom law of Los Angeles County is credited with pushing porn business to other locations like Las Vegas and South Florida.

At present, the porn companies are afraid that the proposed rules will kill adult film industry of California.
