Pravin Mahajan, on Sunday, continued to be in critical condition after 48 hours in the intensive care unit at Thane’s Jupiter Hospital.

Mahajan (50), who was convicted for killing his older brother Pramod Mahajan, was admitted to the hospital on Friday night after he fell unconscious at his Damani Estate home in Thane (W). He suffered a brain hemorrhage after his blood pressure shot up.

Doctors at the hospital said Mahajan’s condition has neither improved nor deteriorated.

“His blood pressure and haemodynamics (blood circulation) have been stabilised, but he continues to be in critical condition and is on a life-support system. His neurological condition is the same as before. We’re still guarded about his prognosis,” said Dr. Ravindra Ghawat.

Doctors, who had put Mahajan under observation for 96 hours, said the mortality rate in such cases was 70-80 per cent, and are now waiting to see if he survives the 96-hour deadline.

“Only when he regains consciousness can we decide on a course of treatment. Our priority now is to stabilise his blood pressure and haemodynamics, and reduce pressure on the brain,” said Ghawat.

A CT scan was again conducted on Sunday, the results are yet to be disclosed. Mahajan’s family does not plan to move him to another hospital. “We have told the family they can get an outside opinion,” said Ghawat.

Mahajan was serving a life sentence at Nashik Central Jail and was out on parole for 14 days. He was to report back to the jail by Saturday evening but was admitted to hospital the night before. On Saturday afternoon, the hospital informed the jail authorities about his condition.

“We haven’t got any response from the jail officials so far. The police have come and checked the patient. We also have no official communication from the state government about the medical team being sent to review his condition,” said Dr Shilpa Tatake, general manager (critical care).

“We have not got any response from the jail so far. A medical team was supposed to review his condition today (Sunday) but even they haven’t come,” said Prasad Pullewar, Mahajan’s brother-in
