Private Promoters To Be Retrained By AITA

A major decision has been taken up by the All India Tennis Association (AITA), as it has decided to cancel all the ATP and WTA tours, which were supposed to be held this month. Further, the Association has decided that no private entrepreneurs would be allowed to organize such events in future.

On 29th and 30th August, AITA’s  executive committee meeting and annual general meeting was held in Goa after which it was decided that ATP and WTA promoters won’t be allowed to hold such events in future as it projects the poor image of the country.

Due to some security concerns, the ATP Tournament was reportedly canceled that earlier was to be held by Globosport in Mumbai but later moved in hands of Reliance ADG in Bangalore.

“I have met the CEO of ATP Asia-Pacific, Brad Drewett, during the Olympics in Beijing and briefed him about the situation. I sought the ATP to deal with the national feeration in future rather than with private entrepreneurs,” reported secretary general of the AITA, Anil Khanna.

It has also been reported by Globosport that the event which was earlier to be organized by them in Mumbai has now been sold to some other party, to be organized later somewhere else.

While addressing the media on Monday, Mr Khanna informed, “We are happy with the ATP Tour event in Chennai run by the IMG and the WTA event held in Bangalore by the Karnataka Association. We don’t want private promoters creating misinformation and bringing disrepute to the country as an unsafe place for holding international events. This matter will be taken up with the Home Ministry.”

He further added, “We may go for bigger Challengers in the $75,000 to $100,000 category. We don’t want to buy Tour events. If the private promoters want to join hands with the AITA to do events, they are welcome.”

It was informed that now Pune would be holding the Asian Championship to be saterted off from 8th December. There would be attempts to get the get wild cards sanctioned in the Qatar Open and the Dubai Open, since there would be no wild cards awarded to the Asian events anymore by the Australian open.
