Recalls refuse to steer off Toyota; Automaker may add Corolla to the list
Models earlier not recalled by Toyota may now be recalled after US regulators begin investigating other Toyota cars' power steering. Toyota might add Corolla to its burgeoning recall list as National Highway Traffic Safety
(NHTSA) plans an inquiry into the half million 2009 and 2010 Corolla cars.
Toyota is reviewing the Corolla's steering and "will certainly recall the car if the issue is related to safety," told, EVP - Shinichi Sasaki while speaking to reporters.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters in Japan Toyota's president - Akio Toyoda, laid out strategies to win back customer confidence and ensured such things won't happen in future. Toyoda said that Toyota will install new brake-override systems in future models and a quicker disclosure of defects, if any in future.
The NHTSA has asked for production data, consumer complaints and other info that will help shed light on how and when Toyota learnt of the problems. Toyoda also said he would consider testifying before congressional hearings if NHTSA comes with a formal request.
