Refresher Training for All Paratroopers and Jumpmasters

In less than two weeks, two paratroopers have died and owing to it, the XVIII Airborne Corps have cancelled all airborne operations.

Maj. Crystal Boring, a spokeswoman for the Fort Bragg, N. C.-based XVIII Airborne Corps, said the corps on Thursday asked all paratroopers and jumpmasters to take refresher training. She said the training for them should get complete before airborne operations can start again.

The order will affect the 82nd Airborne Division, but would have any impact on special operations unit on Fort Bragg. On Tuesday, while performing a night tactical jump, Spc. Nicholas Roberts from the 82nd Airborne Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team lost his life.

The incident took place at Sicily Drop Zone on Fort Bragg. On April 16, Pvt. Joshua Phillips, 19, from the 82nd Airborne's 2nd Brigade Combat Team died. He died during an airborne training exercise at Fort Polk, LA.

Roberts, 27, was an infantryman with the C Company, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Philips was a combat engineer with Alpha Company, 37th Engineer Battalion. Both the deaths are being investigated.

Boring said that Army follows stringent safety measures in order to reduce the risk linked with airborne operations. Accidents can take place during training and they prove devastating for both, the unit and families involved.

It shall however, be noted that serious accidents are extremely rare. Since March 2014, more than 63,000 individual jumps have safely taken place, with three fatalities. The XVIII Airborne Corps will direct the training that will focus on proper static line control and aircraft exit procedures.

Paratroopers will get an additional training in maintaining control of parachute while descending and also, to keep situational awareness of nearby paratroopers during descent through landing. Boring said that paratroopers and jumpmasters will also view videos showing both, good and bad jumps.
