29 children taken ill after consuming Jatropha fruit in UP

Azamgarh - At least 29 children were admitted to a hospital here after they consumed poisonous Jatropha fruits.

The incident took place yesterday in Ishwarpur Pawni village in Atraulia area when the children, aged between 5 to 16, ate Jatropha fruits. Soon they started vomiting and complained of uneasiness, District Chief Medical Officer V B Singh said.

They were rushed to a hospital, where condition of one child is stated to be critical. (PTI)

Mumbai Police comb Azamgarh in search of Abu Rashid

AzamgarhAzamgarh (UP), Oct 3: The Mumbai Police today conducted a search in Azamgarh town of Uttar Pradesh to look out for Abu Rashid, the main suspect in the recent series of bomb blasts across the country.

According to police officials, the Mumbai Crime Branch and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh are jointly conducting search operation in Azamgarh.

Police raids in Azamgarh’s “terror village” underway

Lucknow, Sept 23: Looking for more leads in Delhi blasts case, the Delhi Police on Tuesday in a joint search operation with the Uttar Pradesh Police is carrying out raids in Sanjarpur village of Azamgarh district, said to be the native village of two terrorists nabbed after last Saturday’s serial blasts in New Delhi.

About 300 policemen are part of the massive combing operation by the Anti-Terrorist Squad of the Delhi Police and the Special Task Force of the UP Police. After cordoning off the village, the Police are conducting a house-to-house search inside the village.

A hairdresser of Azamgarh attempts to set a world record

Azamgarh, Mar 7: Aspiring to be named in Guinness Book of World Records, Ansar Sheikh, a hairdresser in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh attempted a unique feat of non-stop haircutting holding the scissors with his mouth.

In his unique endeavour, 41-year-old Ansar Sheikh started cutting hair by holding the scissors with his mouth for 24 hours from 7 pm on March 1 to 7 pm on March 2, no doubt with small breaks for food and water.

People came to see Ansar perform the feat even from far off places. Mohammed Tariq Hashmi was one of them. Ansar is hopeful that his hard work would bear fruit and get him into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Largest Muslim congregation begins in Uttar Pradesh

Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh), Dec 31: A large number of Muslims have gathered in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh District for the Alami Ijtema, the largest international congregation.

This time, congregation is being held in Sherwan, a nondescript hamlet, where discussion will take place on ways to combat targeting of the community worldwide.

The Sherwan village now boasts of a 4.6 million square foot shamina that can accommodate the gathering and includes hostels, clinics and cellular service providers.

Besides devotees from all over India, delegates from Saudi Arabia, France, Canada and the UK are taking part in the meet.
