Security tightened along India Nepal border

Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 5 : The Gorakhpur police here have beefed up security measures along the India-Nepal border to safeguard against terrorist attacks.
Following intelligence reports about the possibility of insurgents crossing the border, the security personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) have become alert and are monitoring the movements along the Sonoli border in the State.
The flight of three Pakistani terrorists from New Delhi has added to the concerns of the SSB officials.
Contending mosquito bites spread AIDS, villagers ostracise HIV patient
Submitted by Sarthak Gupta on Fri, 12/04/2009 - 16:55.Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Dec 4: Yet another case of HIV positive discrimination has been reported from an obscure village in Uttar Pradesh, where a patient has been kept away and also ostracized by the ignorant villagers.
This gory incident has taken place at a village named Sewai in Gorakhpur district, where a patient named Kashi was tested positive a year back, while he was working at Pune, following which he was sent back to his village.
However, no sooner than the villagers learnt about his ailment, they forced him and his family to leave the village.
Paramilitary border force organises dog squad competition

Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Nov 12 : Trained dogs today took part in an inter-frontier dog squad competition organized by the SSB (Armed Border Force).
The three-day contest will end today.
The dogs exhibited their canine abilities during the competition and their performance will be assessed on the basis of marching, searching for their handler, scent discrimination, detection of explosives and narcotics.

Gorakhpur, Oct 19 : Hundreds of Hindus participated in the festival ''Deep Mahotsav'' with utmost devotion by lighting traditional earthen lamps at the famous Surajkund temple in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district on Sunday.
The ''Community Deepavali', which is celebrated by lighting thousands of earthen lamps at the temple tank of Surajkund, is a century old custom and it is believed that it will ward off evil spirits and purify the atmosphere.
However, of late, the objective has been to usher universal peace.

Massive drive to sensitise Uttar Pradesh villagers against AIDS

Gorakhpur, Oct 16 : The Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group, a voluntary organization, has started a massive AIDS and HIV awareness campaign in the Sardarganj and Campierganj areas of Gorakhpur district in Uttar Pradesh.
The programme is aimed at residents who are unaware about HIV or AIDS, even as the disease spread in these parts is rampant. As per reports, almost 4000 people have tested HIV positive in these areas.

Gorakhpur/Varanasi/Trivandrum, Apr 16 : Polling for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections across 15 states and two Union Territories began today amid tight security.
A total of 1,715 candidates, including 122 women, are contesting for the 124 seats, where over nine lakh officials have been deployed across 1.85 lakh polling stations.
The government has also ordered for a stringent check on the state borders to prevent movement of criminals and liquor.
President to award presidential standards to two IAF units

Gorakhpur, Mar 25 : President Pratibha Patil will award presidential standards to 105 Helicopter Unit and 108 Squadron of Indian Air Force (IAF) here today for their meritorious services and on completion of 50 years of their raising.
Both the units have done admirable job during Indo-Pak war and Tsunami calamity.
The President arrived here last evening on a two-day visit to Uttar Pradesh. (ANI)

Gorakhpur, Mar 24: President Pratibha Patil will arrive here on a two-day visit to Uttar Pradesh this evening.
On Wednesday, the President will award presidential standards to 105 Helicopter Unit and 108 Squadron of Indian Air Force (IAF) for their meritorious services and on completion of 50 years of their raising.

Polluted River Ami poses an environmental threat to people of eastern UP

Gorakhpur, Mar 15 : People in Gorakhpur have lodged complaints about several ailments that they suffer from because of the polluted Ami river that flows through the district.
The industrial waste and chemicals flowing in the waters have not only proved lethal for animals, but also to villagers living on its banks.
"Earlier, we used to take bath, wash our utensils and cook food using this water. But now we will die if we drink this water. All the animals have started dying after drinking this water. A lot of diseases have spread due to this water," said Vishwa Vijay Singh, a resident.
Doors open till last moment for pact with SP: Congress

Gorakhpur, Mar 9 : Congress General Secretary and UP in-charge Digvijay Singh on Monday said it would wait till the last moment for an amicable seat sharing arrangement with the Samajwadi party in Uttar Pradesh.
His statement came a day after the SP virtually ended the possibility of an alliance with the Congress.
"Congress will wait till the last moment for an alliance with the SP. Yet, we will think on how many seats we can allot SP like they have decided to leave us six," Digvijay Singh said.
Education gets a major boost in rural India

Gorakhpur, Mar 9 : The Government in association with State Governments has initiated several programmes to provide rural children access to primary education.
These education-related programmes include stipends, mid-day meals and special attention to girl child education.
Children belonging to backward classes are also getting free uniforms.
The mid-day meal schemes attracting students to the educational institutions.
The scheme is aimed at ensuring 70 to 80 percent enrolments of children in village schools.
Union Minister Mahavir Prasad charged for murder case

Gorakhpur, Feb 11 : Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Industries Mahavir Prasad has been charged in connection to the murder of an Ujjarpur village resident Ram Pragat in Gorakhpur district.
Gorakhpur Senior Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra informed that the Allahabad High Court had ordered the registration of a case against Prasad here last night under Section 120 B of the IPC for conspiracy to murder.

Significant numbers of farmers in Gorakhpur region of the state are resorting to tobacco cultivation more vigorously after prices of the commodity-hit spurt at domestic and international markets.
Physically disabled helping smugglers across India-Nepal border

Gorakhpur, Jan. 12: : Trade routes between India and Nepal, which pass through the north Indian states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are misused by smugglers who employ physically disabled persons.
Many people from both the sides of the border are involved in smuggling of rice, wheat and other cereals along the 400-km-long border between Uttar Pradesh and Nepal.
Mafia of smugglers have roped in several such physically challenged persons as carriers of illegal merchandise across the border since such persons escape from being frisked at the checkpoints in Uttar Pradesh and also West Bengal.
Cold wave grips north India

Gorakhpur/Jammu, Dec 31 : Cold wave gripped north India as dipping temperatures and dense fog made life difficult for people.
In Gorakhpur, there was less movement on roads as people chose to remain indoors due to the biting cold.
Thick fog enveloped the city and people huddled around fires to warm themselves.
Covered in thick woolens, the residents braved the winter chill as they went about their work amid a cover of fog. Number of students in schools and colleges declined as youngsters preferred to stay indoors.

Located in Turkpatti Village, the Sun Temple is about 18 kilometres from Kushinagar. It was built by the local villagers after a huge and exquisitively carved idol of Surya
(the Sun God) made of black stone, was discovered while tilling a piece of land.
The temple has idols belonging to the 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th centuries and is visited by villagers and tourists with deep respect and revernce.

Gorakhpur, Oct. 2 : Charkha, the spinning wheel propagated by Mahatma Gandhi which has been a symbol of freedom movement, has no takers today, with weavers drifting to take to modern methods of weaving yarn.
With automation being the key link in almost all economic activities, weavers in Gorakhpur region, who earlier relied on Charkha for their livelihood, admit that it has no relevance today.
Floods displace thousands in Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur, Sept 26 : Floods have inundated over a dozen villages and displaced thousands in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Water in the Ghagra and Kuano rivers have risen more than a feet-and-a-half since Wednesday, overflowing neighbouring villages in Gorakhpur and Deoria Districts.
River embankments caved in as the gushing water swept the banks, threatening atleast 15 houses in Pavaria village.
