ISPR says orders to hit-back at US forces not a recent change in Pak’s “defence policy”

Islamabad, Sept 17: The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the public relations wing of the Pakistan army, has said that giving orders to its troops to hit back at US drones was not a recent change in its policy of defending its territory against foreign incursions.

ISPR chief Maj Gen Athar Abbas said that to defend the country and its people against any foreign aggression was the “stated policy” of the Pakistan Army.

“There has been no recent change in the army’s policy after cross-border incursions by US-led forces. We reserve the right to defend our people in case of any offensive or cross-border incursion and we reserve the right to respond,” the Daily Times quoted Abbas as saying.

Three Pakistani soldiers killed in a suicide attackIslamabad  - At least three paramilitary troops were killed and half a dozen more injured in a suicide attack in Pakistan's restive north-western Swat valley on Tuesday, officials said.

"A car suicide bomber struck at a camp of paramilitary Frontier Corps in Totano Bandi area of Kabal sub-district late in the night," army spokesman Major Murad Khan told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Following the attack, the militants fired several rockets at the militants, triggering a firefight which continued for several hours.

Pakistan demands immediate end to US incursions

Islamabad, PakistanIslamabad - Pakistan on Tuesday demanded an immediate end to incursions by US forces into its territory as the country's jets and helicopter gunships pounded insurgent positions in the tribal areas along the Afghan border, killing 10 rebels and two civilians.

"The sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country would be safeguarded at all costs," Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said in a meeting with British Justice Secretary Jack Straw in Islamabad.

100 women raped daily in Karachi, says police doctor

PakistanIslamabad  - Around 100 women are raped every day in Pakistan's largest city of Karachi, a leading police doctor was quoted as saying Tuesday.

Most were working women or those working as domestic helps, and aged 20 or under, the English Language Daily Times quoted the city's Deputy Police Surgeon Dr Zulfiqar Siyal as saying.

"I am saying with full authority that such a large number of rape cases happen in the city," he told the newspaper on the sidelines of a discussion on sexual violence organized by a women's rights organization, Aurat Foundation.

Thousands of troops backed by tanks and artillery pushed into the district of Bajaur, particularly in the Rashakai, Loi Sam and Tang Khata strongholds of Taliban militants and al-Qaeda-linked fighters from Central Asia, the military said.
