Italy, Spain, Greece head EU offenders list as Poland catches up

European-UnionBrussels - Italy, Spain and Greece are the worst countries in the European Union for breaking the bloc's laws on creating a single market, with Poland catching up fast, a study published by the European Commission in Brussels on Thursday showed.

Italy is currently facing legal action - known as "infringement proceedings" - from the commission in no fewer than 112 cases, the highest figure in the bloc, the EU executive's report said. Spain was second with 103 cases.

Greece came in third, with 91 cases, closely followed by Germany, with 90.

Valverde still Rome-bound after judge voids Italian caseMadrid/Rome  - A Madrid judge ruled Wednesday that Italian anti-doping proceedings against Alejandro Valverde are "null and void," but the Spanish cyclist said that he would appear anyway in an effort to clear his name.

Madrid Judge Antonio Serrano ruled that proceedings initiated against Valverde by Italy's National Olympic Committee (CONI) made unlawful use of blood samples seized from alleged doping doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, in an investigation against the winner of the UCI ProTour championships in 2006 and 2008.

King Juan Carlos in US on 450th anniversary of Spanish settlement Miami  - The king and queen of Spain will visit Florida Thursday to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the first Spanish settlement in Pensacola, believed to be among the earliest European colonies in the United States.

King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia, who will be in the US after a state visit to Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, haven't elicited much media interest.

Alaves players robbed whilst out training

Madrid  - Spanish news agency EFE reported on Wednesday evening that the players of second division team Alaves were robbed earlier in the evening whilst out on the training field.

An individual, who has still not been identified, allegedly entered the team's dressing-room and helped himself to mobile telephones, cash, credit cards and jewellery.

The suspect was spotted by one of the club's physio's and escaped in a car, only to be arrested later by the police. However, none of the stolen objects have so far been recovered.

The incident took place at Alaves' training ground in Ibaia, on the outskirts of the Basque regional capital Vitoria.

GSMA to realize charging standardization for mobile phones by 2012

GSMA The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Tuesday had GSMA announce its plan to realize an industry-wide standard with regard to a universal mobile phone charger by January 2012.

Bigwigs, like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung, and Qualcomm, are among the seventeen mobile handset-makers and service-providers that are backing GSMA's announcement of a universal charging solution -UCS - based on the industry-standard Micro USB interface.
