Patil calls for concerted global combatting of terrorismDushanbe (Tajikistan), Sep. 7 : Expressing her happiness over the regular meetings of the India-Tajikistan Joint Commission, visiting Indian President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Monday emphasised the need for both countries and the rest of the international community to make a concerted effort to cooperate and combat the menace of terrorism.

During her talks with the Tajik leadership, President Patil mentioned the Mumbai attack and said that the menace of terrorism needed to be countered to ensure peace and prosperity in the region.

The Indian leader will also travel to Tajikistan during her week-long two-nation tour.

According to the report, a spate of militant clashes in Tajikistan is emerging as a cause of concern for neighboring Central Asian nations and Russia.

The issue of regional security was raised at a Thursday summit in Tajik capital Dushanbe with the presidents of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Russia.

The arrests came at a mosque during prayers, and included the head of a banned extremist organisation.

The grouping, called the Salafiya Movement, calls for a fight to extinguish "putrid Western Civilisation."

While tourists swarm over the neighbouring Himalayas, not many have heard of the Pamir Highway, an insider tip among mountain lovers.

Averaging 4,000 metres in height, the Pamirs, known as "the roof of the world," are the second-highest mountainous area in the world. They are situated mainly in the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan, and extend into China, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan. Many peaks exceed 7,000 metres.

NATO supplies to Afghanistan via Tajikistan –Uzbekistan route: Harnitchek

NATODushanbe, Feb 21 : The United States would be sending supplies to its troops stationed in Afghanistan through a new route via Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, a top US military leader has informed.

Rear Admiral Mark Harnitchek said Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have agreed to allow transit of non-lethal US supplies through their territory.

"Tajikistan has given its agreement to the use of its rail and automobile routes for the transit of non-lethal supplies to Afghanistan," The Dawn quoted Harnitchek, as saying.

Tajikistan, Uzbekistan approve NATO supply transit

NATO, AfghanistanDushanbe, Feb. 20 : Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have approved the transportation of non-military NATO supplies for Afghanistan via their territory, a US military commander said on Tajik state television.

"Tajikistan has allowed (NATO) to use its railways and roads to transit non-military goods to Afghanistan," said Rear Admiral Mark Harnitchek of the US Transportation Command.

Washington is looking for alternative supply routes for NATO troops stationed in Afghanistan after militants in Pakistan stepped up their attacks on supply fleets.

Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement signed between India and Tajikistan

India, TajikistanNew Delhi, Nov 20 : A Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement was signed between India and Tajikistan on Thursday.

The agreement was signed between the countries, by Central Board of Direct Taxes Chairman Narendra Bahadur Singh, and by Deputy Minister of Finance of the Republic of Tajikistan Norinov Jamshed Nurmahmadovich.

The agreement will cover in the case of India, income tax including any surcharge thereon and in the case of Tajikistan, the taxes on income of legal persons and taxes on income of individuals.

UN: Dramatic drops in Central Asia's fisheries sector

Rome, Dushanbe, Tajikistan - Fisheries production in the Central Asian and Caucasus republics has "plummeted dramatically" in the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union, a UN food agency said Monday.

The crisis is topping the agenda when nine member nations of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) began meeting in Tajikistan on Monday

The Rome-based FAO estimates that between 1989 and 2006 annual inland fisheries and aquaculture production in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan fell from between 60 to 72 per cent.

Tajikistan's production dropped 94 per cent, and Kyrgyzstan's 98 per cent, during the same period.
