Seven sports pitch for place at the Olympics

Seven sports pitch for place at the OlympicsLausanne, Switzerland - Golf and rugby sevens are among seven sports pitching to join the Olympics at a presentation at International Olympic Committee headquarters in Lausanne Monday.

The IOC executive board is also hearing from representatives of baseball, softball, karate, roller sports and squash who are vying to be on the 2016 Olympics programme.

Baseball and softball are seeking a return to the Olympics after being voted off the programme for the 2012 London Games in 2005.

In August, the 15-member board will select two sports to recommend for a vote by the full IOC membership in Copenhagen in October.

President Jacques Rogge and the board have received a report from the programme commission which has analysed the seven and attended major events.

On Wednesday and Thursday, IOC members will also receive a first briefing from the cities in the running to host the 2016 summer Games - Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.

The briefing will cover technical aspects of the bids and "allows all the cities to compete on an equal footing," the IOC said.

The presentations will give IOC members the opportunity to put questions to the cities before the IOC session in Copenhagen where the host city will be selected on October 2. (dpa)
