Smart Condom changes color when comes in Contact with STDs

Students from England’s Isaac Newton Academy have developed a smart condom known as ‘S.T.E.YE’. The condom’s color will change when it is exposed to common sexually transmitted disease (STD). It has built-in indicator that will make condom’s color change as per the virus detected.

The development is the brainchild of three British school children- Daanyaal Ali, 14, Muaz Nawaz, 13 and Chirag Shah, 14. All the three students wanted to detection of STDs safer.

All the three students took part in the TeenTech exhibition. On Tuesday, all the three students have won honor in the UK’s TeenTech Awards. They have won around $1,500 and a trip to meet Prince Andrew at Buckingham Palace later this year.

“I think the reason the judges put this idea first was because the project showed how much learning these boys had done while researching sexually transmitted diseases”, said TeenTech CEO Maggie Philbin.

Students explained that there are chemicals on the condom that would attach to the virus and will make molecules on the condom to react and leads to different colors depending on the disease. If the condom is exposed to chlamydia, it might glow green; yellow for herpes, purple for human papillomavirus (HPV) and blue for syphilis.

Daanyaal, 14, said that they have developed the new condom to detect STI detection to help future of the next generation. They want to make harmful STIs safer than ever before.
