As spring weather continued to put planting far ahead of historic averages, Grain futures go down sharply

AgricultureAccording to the official reports, wheat prices fell sharply Monday on the Chicago Board of Trade as spring weather continued to put planting far ahead of historic averages.

Corn was off 3/4 to off 1 3/4, soybeans were off 3/4 to off 2 1/2, wheat was off 15 3/4 to off 17 1/2 and oats were off 2/4 to unchanged.

After the U. S. Department of Agriculture said planting was 50 percent done, compared with a 5-year historic average of 22 percent for this week of the year, Corn futures dropped.

Compared with a historic average of 27 percent Spring wheat planting is 43 percent done.

Prices for soybean -- generally planted later in the spring -- fell modestly with export inspections at 89.5 percent of the USDA's projection compared to a 5-year average of 81.2 percent. (With Inputs from Agencies)
