Sunderbans faces fresh tidal wave threat

Sunderbans faces fresh tidal wave threatStill struggling to grow out of the trauma of the devastation caused by Cyclone Aila, the people around the “beautiful jungle” are set to witness the fresh tidal wave hitting Sunderbans on Friday. The Irrigation Minister Subhas Naskar cautioned that several areas of the Sunderbans will be again flooded on Friday, and it will cause further damage.

Naskar told that due to the lack of manpower, the government is incapable of repairing 20 per cent of the breaches in the embankments before Friday.

According to the estimate of the Irrigation Department, the fresh tidal wave could severely impact the four gram panchayats of Gosaba block and the sea facing areas of Patharpratima and Sandeshkhali blocks.

Kanti Ganguly, the Sunderban Affairs Minister, has alerted that the administration has keyed out 19 points in the various blocks, which could be adversely affected by the tidal wave on Friday. According to Ganguly, the administration will deploy the rescue team of the civil defence department at these points on Friday.
