Taiwan to promote fruit sales in China

Taipei & ChinaTaipei - Taiwan, taking advantage of the Beijing Olympic Games, will launch a month-long campaign in Beijing in August to promote Taiwan fruit, an official said Wednesday.

Taiwan's Council of Agriculture (COA) will hold a news conference at Beijing's Chateau de Luze hotel to introduce pineapple, star fruit, guava and mango, COA Director Chen Wu-hsiung told reporters.

The four fruits were chosen as "designated fruits for the August 8-24 Beijing Olympics". Taiwan will supply 10 tons of them to the Olympic athletes' village.

From August 1-31, COA would unveil huge posters at 30 subway stations in Beijing to promote Taiwan fruits, Chen said.

On September 1, COA would hold another news conference in Beijing for Chinese fruit wholesalers, to promote packaged Taiwan fruits as ideal gifts during the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 14.

Thanks to eased cross-strait tension, more and more Taiwan fruit is being shipped to China each year, sold as luxury items.

"Taiwan has been selling about 2,000 tons of fruit to China each year in recent years. We hope to increase fruit export to China by 10 per cent in 2009 and by at least 20 per cent in 2010," Chen said. (dpa)
